Our Philosophy

Preserving the Appaloosa coat pattern

Here at STJ Acres, we believe that one of the characteristics that is too often missed, is coat pattern. When one reflects back on the history of the Appaloosa breed or asks anyone, including horse folk of other breeds, what the clearest identifying characteristic of this breed, it is coat pattern. This characteristic needs to be preserved and even strengthened as one continues to breed for that perfect Appaloosa confirmation. Although confirmation correctness is just as important, we feel that you need to breed for both, that is why breeding Appaloosas raises the challenges that it does, it is not simply a confirmation match, but a calculated risk in attempting to get the coat pattern that makes the breed what it is.

What we believe in

Cherishing our mares

Having said this, we realise that some of the best mares in any breeding program may not be fortunate enough to have received the brush stroke of coat pattern, yet have a very important place in a breeding program. It is there that they should be cherished and not front and centre as the best representation of the breed. These mares might very well be a top producer in the program as well as conformationally one of the most correct horses in the program but they are still missing the most identifiable characteristics of the breed… colour. We must ensure that this characteristic is not lost, or worse yet over time, becomes the exception rather than the rule. Each of us must breed to ensure the longevity of the Appaloosa and maintain its uniqueness in the equine industry. Each individual has chosen to breed Appaloosas for their own individual reason, to make sure they are true to the breed.

Sincerely,

Steve & Tara Jansen
